The accident occurred before noon in the 300 block of Hamilton Street.
Dauphin County District Attorney Fran Chardo gave this account:
The woman and two men were using the Jeep to remove a large shrub from in front of the home. At one point, one of the men intended to put the vehicle in “park,” and he stepped out of the Jeep while it was still running. But the vehicle, which is an automatic, was in “reverse” instead of “park.”
The Jeep began rolling backwards, so the man rushed back to the Jeep to try to stop it, but he tripped on the curb and fell. He reached into the Jeep with his hand to push on the brake, but inadvertently pushed on the accelerator.
The Jeep then backed up and pinned the woman.
The other man jumped into the Jeep and pulled forward to free the woman, who later died from her injuries.
Investigators interviewed witnesses and reviewed home surveillance video as part of the investigation.
“It was clearly accidental,” Chardo said, adding that no charges would be filed.
Police did not release the woman’s name.
