CRESTVIEW — Land clearing is underway from Arena Road to Enzor Road as part of  the southwest Crestview bypass project.

In a video posted to the Okaloosa Board of County Commissioners Facebook page, Public Works Director Jason Autrey said the project is ramping up quickly and could take up to 3 1/2 years to complete. When finished, the section will include four lanes of road, a stormwater system and enough space for a sidewalk.

"Largely, it won't affect traffic that we have today because we're working in areas where you aren't driving," Autrey said of the construction. "We'll be able to come out here and see this progress, but the general public won't notice it because it's a new road. It's in a location that's not visible from the open roadway."

This new road will tie into several other Crestview Bypass road expansion projects to help the county keep up with growth in Crestview and Okaloosa County, as well as to help ease traffic congestion along State Road 85.

Overall planned improvements include:

  • Widening of PJ Adams Parkway from 2 lanes to 4 from SR 85 to Interstate 10.
  • Construction of a new overpass and interchange at I-10 (performed by Florida Department of Transportation in coordination with Okaloosa County).
  • Construction of a four lane road from I-10 to U.S. Highway 90.
  • Construction of an East-West Connector from Antioch Road to SR 85 north of I-10.

The improvements will be completed in phases, according to the county's infrastructure website: http://myokaloosa.com/bcc/infrastructureprojects.

Work to widen PJ Adams Parkway from SR 85 to Wildhorse Drive is underway.

Phase IV, from Wildhorse Drive to Crab Apple Avenue, will be under construction soon.

The total Crestview bypass project cost is estimated at $214 million. That includes design and construction of the interchange with I-10 by the Florida Department of Transportation and participation by the city of Crestview.

Current construction and design activities are being funded by a range of sources, including state grants, Capital Improvement Program (CIP), PJ Adams Tax Increment Financing as well as city and county surtax funds.
